Michael's Technical Stuff

Ann is the author of this web site but I will come in now and again with comments on the boat and other technical matters. We have now done about 600nm and Silueta has behaved superbly. We bought her from Offshore Powerboats in Lymington, as we did our first Nimbus Cloud Nine, but Andreu Piza of Ponent Yachts in Port Adriano has looked after both boats whilst we have been in Mallorca – he also sold Cloud Nine for us- and he has done an outstanding job. When we arrived in Port Adriano at the start of this journey Silueta looked brand new and was ready to go. He had installed a new Raymarine C80 chartplotter for us after we had lost confidence in the original Simrad, despite it having gone back to the manufacturer and been replaced and had other attention from Simrad. The new chartplotter has behaved perfectly and is very easy to use. I have plotted in the waypoints for the next day and the plotter together with my paper charts have made navigation easy. The boat herself has been very comfortable, even in the heavy seas we experienced when crossing to Corsica, and very comfortable to live in. Having seen many other boats, including the giants, we would not want any other boat for us to live on for two months a year as we are doing, and making long journeys as we are now. For the two of us we find it easy to handle. We have been using between 40 and 58 litres of fuel per hour, depending on speed and sea state. We normally cruise at 3000 revs, about 20 kn, but have gone down to 14 or 15 kn when the sea state made that more comfortable. I have checked the oil and coolant after every trip and have topped up the oil a little but have had no need to top up the coolant. We have had one minor problem when the green light on the throttle stayed on even after the engines were turned off. Andreu solved it for me during several phone calls when I was lying almost under the engine, and a call to Volvo. We needed to re-set the electronic control. In the end we achieved success by pulling out the power cable and re-connecting it, just like I do with my computer at home when it fails to switch off. Thank you Andreu.
